ICAR-CMFRI organises panel disucssion on remote sensing for sustainable fisheries at ACRS 2026, New Delhi
The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CMFRI) organised a panel discussion on “Harnessing Remote Sensing Potential for Sustainable Fisheries” at the 47th Asian Conference on Remote Sensing (ACRS 2026) in New Delhi on October 15, highlighting the role of satellite technologies in strengthening sustainable fisheries management and climate resilience.
The panel discussed how satellite-based observations and geospatial technologies can help address the challenges posed by climate change, including ocean warming, marine heatwaves and shifts in the distribution of fish stocks. The experts emphasised the need to integrate satellite-derived information with fisheries science, field observations and local knowledge to support evidence-based fisheries management and protect the livelihoods of fishing communities.
Moderated by Dr. Shubhadeep Ghosh, Assistant Director General, ICAR, the session explored the use of satellite data on sea surface temperature, ocean colour and other oceanographic parameters to improve understanding of changing marine environments and their implications for fisheries.
The experts highlighted the potential of remote sensing to strengthen early-warning systems and fisheries advisories, including information on potential fishing zones and weather-related risks. Timely and reliable advisories can help fishers make informed decisions, improve fishing operations and reduce risks at sea.
The discussions also stressed the importance of scientific validation of satellite-based information, stronger collaboration among research institutions and government agencies, and effective last-mile delivery of advisories to fishing communities to ensure that technological advances translate into practical benefits.
The panel featured Dr. Devika Pillai, Assistant Director General, ICAR; Dr. K. Mohammed Koya, Fisheries Development Commissioner, Government of India; Dr. Aneesh Lotliker, Scientist, Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS); and Dr. Divu D and Dr. Vinay Kumar Vase of ICAR-CMFRI.
Dr. Ratheesh Raveendran and Dr. Shelton Padwa of ICAR-CMFRI coordinated the session.
