ICAR-CMFRI Secures Design Patent for Black Soldier Fly Breeding Unit
The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Kochi has been granted a design patent by the Patent Office, Government of India, for its Integrated Black Soldier Fly (BSF) Breeding and Early Larval Production Unit, marking a significant step in advancing sustainable aquaculture technologies.
The patented system enables efficient and scalable production of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL), a nutrient-rich alternative to conventional fishmeal and fish oil. With a protein content of around 40–45% and lipids ranging from 25–35%, BSFL is considered a promising ingredient for aquafeed formulations.
The unit streamlines key processes such as breeding, egg collection and early larval production, resulting in higher larval yield, improved survival rates and operational efficiency. Its portable and user-friendly design allows easy transport and on-site deployment, supporting wider adoption.
The innovation also promotes a circular bioeconomy by converting organic waste into valuable biomass, reducing environmental burden and lowering dependence on marine resources for feed inputs.
This innovation directly contributes to sustainable aquaculture, climate resilient feed systems and blue economy development.
