Abstract : The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) has been working on seaweed mariculture and seaweed utilization in India since 1972. Annual seaweed harvest estimation (wild collection) from the Indian coast and production through farming in the sea along the east coast of India are being enumerated periodically by this Institute from which the potential seaweed yield has been estimated at 0.26 million tonnes/year. The institute is promoting seaweed farming activity along the coast through the Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan (SCSP) programme. The institute has developed and commercialized many nutraceutical products from seaweeds, which received appreciation from the Government of India. The Mandapam Regional Centre of ICAR-CMFRI has developed a cottage industry model for the manufacture of agar from Gracilaria spp. and demonstrated agar production to many farmers and entrepreneurs. These demonstrations have paved the way for the development of many smallscale agar industries in Madurai district, Tamil Nadu. More than 60 hands-on training programmes were conducted at Mandapam RC of ICAR-CMFRI on farming of Kappaphycus and native seaweed species during 2011-2022 covering 1636 trainees (fishers and government officials) from Andaman & Nicobar, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. Currently the institute is conducting a series of awareness-cum-training programmes on Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and seaweed farming. This has resulted in creating interest among many farmers/entrepreneurs to adopt seaweed farming. As a part of disseminating knowledge, a document on Good Management Practices on seaweed farming has been prepared. The document has a step-by-step narration of what one should and should not do in seaweed farming.

Abstract : The human resource development activities at I CAR-CM FRI are administered by the HRD Cell of the Institute. The day-to-day affairs ofthe Cell are being managed by a Committee consisting of a Nodal Officer and two Co-nodal Officers. The Institute offers unique opportunities for research and training to post-graduate (Masters and Doctoral) and Post-Doctoral Fellows and researchers in various streams of marine fisheries, mariculture and allied areas. The research and trainings are coordinated as per Institute guidelines, which are in full conformity with that of the Human Resource Management (HRM) unit of ICAR. The realistic and long-lasting socio-economic development can be achieved only through scientific and rational utilization of these natural resources. Therefore, appropriate developmental programs have to be designed through holistic approaches to ensure sustainable exploitation. The utilization of fishery resources, with very high exploitable potentials, coupled with the availability of suitable human resources has to get top priority while contemplating the strategies.

Abstract : Biodiversity is the mainstay of ecosystem services and functions and supports the livelihood of millions of people. Sustainable utilization and conservation of our rich biological diversity is a prerequisite for human survival. India is a megadiverse country and with only 2.4% of the world’s geographical area, it accounts for 7 to 8% of all recorded species. Our country is a signatory to various international instruments focussing on matters of biodiversity, including the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The country has an obligation to protect our rich biological diversity and is one of the leaders in having established a comprehensive legal and institutional system to achieve the objectives of the CBD. Expansion of India’s Protected Area (PA) network, including ‘Conservation and Community Reserves’ is one of the important action points of the National Biodiversity Action Plan of our country. The Kadalundi-Vallikunnu Community Reserve which lies in the Malabar region is the first Community Reserve of Kerala and is known for its rich biological diversity. Endowed with dense mangrove forests and mudflats, the Community Reserve is an abode to a large number of avian fauna, including many migratory species. Fishing and ecotourism have been the mainstay of income generation for many local inhabitants of the Community Reserve. Considering the ecological significance, diversity of wetland avian fauna and the burden of heavy anthropogenic pressures, the Kadalundi estuary was officially declared as the ‘Kadalundi-Vallikunnu Community Reserve’ in October, 2007. Bio-inventorying and documentation of biodiversity is invaluable for the wise use of our ecosystems and the sustainability of biological resources. This publication is an outcome of a detailed study conducted by the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute in collaboration with the Kerala State Biodiversity Board to document the rich biodiversity of the Kadalundi-Vallikunnu Community Reserve and to assess the economic value of the various ecosystem services rendered by the Community Reserve. The publication provides an insight in to the diversity of plankton, seagrass, mangroves, mangrove associates, avian fauna, molluscs, crustaceans and finfishes of the Community Reserve with an overview of the economic value of the ecosystem services.

Abstract : The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) is a premier research institute involved in marine fisheries and mariculture research in the past several decades. The institute has been instrumental in developing noteworthy technologies and policies aimed at augmenting fish production and livelihoods of coastal fisherfolk in the country. In view of the declining catches from the marine capture fisheries, the enormous potential of mariculture need to be tapped for achieving the blue revolution targets. CMFRI has made significant strides in developing and popularising mariculture technologies such as mussel and edible oyster farming, sea weed farming, seed production techniques for high value finfishes and marine ornamental fishes. Cage fish farming is an emerging aquaculture technology in the country developed and popularised by the institute. Development of hatchery technologies of high value finfishes, standardisation of culture protocols as well as successful frontline demonstrations and participatory technology development programmes by the institute paved the way for popularisation of cage fish farming in all the maritime states of the country. Cage fish farming is low impact farming technology with high economic returns which has tremendous scope for employment and income generation for the coastal population in the country. There are at present 3000 cage farm units installed in the marine and coastal waters of the country under the direct technical supervision of CMFRI.

Abstract : India is a signatory to various international instruments focussing on matters of biodiversity, including the Convention on Biological Diversity and has an obligation to protect our rich biological diversity, including the marine ecosystem and its varied resources. Of the marine ecosystems, the coral reefs are important being highly productive with rich biodiversity, offering numerous ecosystem services and in addition, serve as protectors of shoreline. As a result, these ecosystems have been centres of active research for the past several decades across the globe. In India, most of the coral reef research concentrated around the Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the Gulf of Mannar, Palk Bay and the Gulf of Kachchh. However, there is a need to explore new areas of coral existence and in this endeavour, studies have shown the existence of coral patches in Ratnagiri, Malvan and Redi, south of Mumbai and at the Gaveshani Bank off Mangalore. The occurrence of coral reefs along the south-west coast of India in general and Kerala coast in particular was once thought to be meagre to non-existent. In 1995, the ICAR-CMFRI recorded 13 hermatypic corals from the patchy reefs of Enayam and Vizhinjam and 16 ahermatypes collected during research cruises on board FORV Sagar Sampada. However, extensive studies on coral diversity through underwater surveys in the patchy reef areas from Enayam to Kollam was carried out for the first time during 2008-2012 by ICAR-CMFRI, after a span of more than a decade. Studies during this period, focussed on the scleractinian corals as well as on the sponges and reef fishes of the area, and the present publication is an outcome of this study.

Abstract : India is one of the major elasmobranch fishing nations in the world. With growing concern over issues of conservation and management of elasmobranch resources in Indian waters, particularly of those species that are vulnerable to over-exploitation there is a need to strengthen reporting of species-wise catch and trade data. Proper identification of elasmobranch species poses many challenges to researchers, stakeholders and policy implementing agencies since there are a lot of taxonomic ambiguities with a high degree of overlap of several identifying characters, added to the fact that these resources lack external meristic characters that can easily help with their identification. Species-wise catch estimates are important in assessing status of fisheries stocks and knowledge of prominent characters that can aid easy and almost accurate identification of a specimen in the field. This assumes much importance in light of the fact that ICAR-CMFRI’s catch monitoring surveys are carried out at fish landing centres where the catches are disposed of at great speed, affording very little time for detailed examination of specimens.

Abstract : Marine capture fisheries is an important component of the fisheries sector in India, generating livelihood avenues for an estimated 3.79 million fishers directly besides those involved in the secondary and tertiary structures concerned with fish marketing, processing and exports of fish and fishery products. Sustainable harvesting of the marine fishery resources is important in a scenario where there is large scale over-capitalisation in the sector and abrupt and long-term disruptions in environmental parameters due to climate change related processes. The Indian Oil Sardine, a major single species fishery in India accounts for 17 - 20% of the total marine fish landings. At the national level, in landing volumes it is the top ranked species during most years. Among marine fishes, its importance as a favoured table fish and rich source of fish oils creates a unique position for the Indian oil sardine in terms of its economic value. However, the resource is prone to sudden fluctuations in abundance that makes it an enigma to researchers, fishers and managers. ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute has conducted extensive research on the resource since its inception and several aspects of its biology, fishery and stock assessment have been reported periodically. Considering the importance of this resource to the marine fisheries sector of India, it is important to compile all existing information and subsequent research insights to assist its efficient management along the Indian coast. I am happy that the scientists of the Pelagic Fisheries Division of CMFRI have completed the task of compiling all recent information and analysed large amount of data collected pertaining to the Indian Oil Sardine in this document for the benefit of all stakeholders interested in knowing about this valuable fishery resource.

Abstract : A new Marine Biodiversity Museum was established at Kochi following the shifting of the headquarters of the Institute from Mandapam to Kochi. The Museum was inaugurated by Padma Vibhushan Prof. M.S. Swaminathan on 4th February 2006. The museum now holds around 2300 specimens of various categories such as fishes, echinoderms, molluscs, crustaceans, corals, seaweeds etc. These specimens are of fundamental importance to taxonomic, systematic and biodiversity studies. The first catalogue on Marine Biodiversity Museum comprised of specimens belonging to all the groups was published in 2012. The present catalogue prepared by the Marine Biodiversity Division of the Institute is expected to update the present status of the specimens in the museum as on March 2017. I am happy to bring out this catalogue in the year of Platinum Jubilee celebrations of CMFRI (1947-2017). The help and support extended by the previous Directors of CMFRI and Museum-in-charges are gratefully acknowledged. Majority of the specimens in the Museum represents the collections made by scientists of CMFRI as part of their research activities. The keen interest shown and the sincere effort put in by the scientists of the Institute in building up this Museum as an invaluable gift to those who pursue science need special mention. They have deposited their valuable specimens in the Museum and contributed in one way or the other to bring it to the present status. I congratulate all those who have been involved in the collection, preservation, identification and cataloguing of the specimens in the Marine Biodiversity Museum.

Abstract : India occupies sixth position globally in marine capture fish production. An estimated 1.0 million people are directly involved with fishing in India and 4.0 million people depend for their livelihood on the marine fisheries resources. The Indian marine fisheries sector is currently faced by several issues like over-capitalization, over-exploitation and climate change. The impacts of climate change on marine fisheries are amply visible in the Indian EEZ. The features associated with climate change like rise in sea surface temperature, change in season and intensity of monsoon, variation in current pattern, ocean acidification etc. are likely to make changes in the community structure and phenology of marine fishes. Such impacts have brought perceptible changes in the fishery of some species, forcing fisherfolk to make changes in fishing operations. Fishes are poikilothermic–their body temperature varies with the surrounding environmental thermal conditions. While most poikilothermic organisms are capable of functioning over a wide range of temperatures, the metabolic costs of this are likely to be high. Some fishes are also affected by climate change during embryonic development and in fishes exhibiting temperature- dependent sex determination, differences in temperature as low as 1-2°C can significantly alter the sex ratio of populations. Phenological changes also abound. Spawning activity has shifted in some species to comparatively cooler months, and hatching success decreases at higher temperatures. It has been predicted that pelagic fishes, which generally spawn year round, and have higher generation turnover, will adapt faster than their benthic counterparts. Adaptation at different rates will cause shifts in the current ecological balance, resulting in loss of biodiversity. Some species may also suffer changes in their distributional range. Thus, it has become exceedingly clear that the varied risks posed by global warming and climate change present a significant danger to the health and survival of the denizens of the marine world, necessitating timely action and global cooperation to avert such a disaster.
