Intellectual Property Management and Technology Transfer/ Commercialization Unit (ITMU)
ICAR–CMFRI has developed a wide range of innovative technologies, techniques and scientific protocols that contribute to sustainable fisheries, ecosystem management and societal welfare. These scientific contributions support sustainable resource utilization, ecosystem conservation and human well-being, with appropriate avenues for intellectual property protection, dissemination and application based on their nature and potential.The Institute Technology Management Unit (ITMU) and Institute Technology Management Committee (ITMC) were established during 2006–2008 under the XI Plan scheme on Intellectual Property Management and Technology Transfer/Commercialization. Established at CMFRI in 2008, the ITMU functions as the institute-level operational unit for identification, evaluation, protection, maintenance and management of intellectual property, including patents, designs and other IP assets. It also facilitates technology transfer and commercialization through licensing, MoUs, public–private partnerships and other appropriate mechanisms in accordance with ICAR policies.Role of ITMU in the Institute
The ITMU of ICAR-CMFRI functions according to the ICAR IP guidelines:- IP protection, maintenance and management
- Maintenance and updating of patent informatics
- Patent filing; invite expert opinion from patent attorney/ IPR expert.
- Compilation of data related to patent database
- Correction/ rectification/ updation of primary information related to submitted patent proposals
- Technology transfer/ commercialization.

The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) has officially registered a trademark entitled ‘CADALMIN‘ for the products and services of the institute. The official registration of trademark ‘CADALMIN’ was done in the office of the registrar of Trademarks, India, Chennai. The applications were filed under the guidance of the approved license holding agency, ‘Trademark for India’ in two classes 31 and 35 covering the food for fish, seeds, trading and marketing.
